Joining the AGS
Membership Categories
Full Membership
Full AGS membership is open to:
- Any person who holds a full-time or part-time teaching or research appointment within the field of or including German Studies at a university in Great Britain or Ireland, or at a college within such a university, and
- Such other suitable persons nominated by a member of the Association as the Committee from time to time may approve.
Associate Membership
Associate AGS membership is open to:
- University teachers in neighbouring disciplines, especially Dutch and Scandinavian Studies, Comparative Literature, and Comparative Linguistics;
- Lecturers with responsibility for the training of teachers of German in university departments of Education;
- Full-time or part-time lecturers in German in institutions of higher education deemed to be of equivalent status;
- Former members of the Association who take up appointments to teach German at universities outside these islands;
- Lektors in German at British and Irish universities for the duration of their appointment and such other suitable persons nominated by a member of the Association as the Committee from time to time may approve;
- Students engaged in research in German Studies and/or in neighbouring disciplines.
- Retired members of the AGS
Postgraduate Membership
Students studying for a higher degree by research in an area of German Studies may pay a single subscription of £15/€22 entitling them to membership throughout their period of full-time registration.
Life Membership
Life membership is open to retired members for a one-off payment of £70/ €80.
